Places to Visit

Murcia has been described as one of the most beautiful and historic cities in Spain.  It is full of monuments to the past.  Some of the most impressive include the Bishop's Palace located near the Cathedral; the 18th century Convent Church of Santa Ana; the Church of San Miguel, also 18th century,.and the Almudi, which dates from 1602.  There are also a number of museums that you can visit including the Museum of Archaeology, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Salzillo Museum.  A large and thriving university ensures there is a vibrant nightlife with bars and restaurants to suit all tastes.  For those interested in shopping, there is lots of choice available from the boutique shops you’ll find in the centre of the city to the large and modern shopping complexes like Nueva Condiminium and Thader, on the outskirts.

Cartagena dates back to Roman times and traces of its Roman past can still be found today.  It is famous as a naval city and is still one of Spain’s key naval ports.  It is fair to say, however, that Cartagena has not come through history unscathed and a number of its older buildings are long gone. That said, those that remain are being restored and the city is well worth a visit.  Things to see include Peral’s submarine prototype dating back to 1884; the bull ring, built in 1854 and the castle of La Concepcion in Torres park.

Lorca has many historical buildings but the most famous and popular is its hilltop castle, from which there are magnificent views of the city and the surrounding area. Other places to visit include the Plaza Mayor, where you will a number of interesting old public buildings and the market.

Sierra Espuna is situated in the centre of Murcia province and covers an area of more than 25,000 hectares.  In 1978 10,000 hectares were designated as a national park. It is a wonderful area of peaks and valleys with great trekking paths and viewing points.  A real taste of the great outdoors!

Jumilla is surrounded by a number of large vineyards and wines from the area are gaining an international reputation for their high quality. Some of these vineyards are open to the public and offer explanations about the wine making process and offer you the opportunity to taste the wines they produce.
